Is BG CVT Fluid the Same as Nissan NS-3?

BG Products makes several transmission fluid products, so the product name matters. BG has a specific version of its Universal Synthetic CVT Fluid designated NS-3 Green, part number 3183-03, stating that it matches Nissan NS-3 CVT fluid. 

BG currently offers Premium Full Synthetic CVT Fluid, which BG designed specifically for belt- and chain-driven CVTs.

What If a Dealer Used BG Fluid Instead of Nissan NS-3?

If a service facility used a BG product specifically identified for Nissan NS-3 applications during a CVT fluid change, it did not use an unrelated BG transmission fluid.

Nissan Canada says to use Genuine Nissan CVT Fluid NS-3 or equivalent only.  The word “equivalent” means that the manufacturer does not require the fluid bottle to carry the Nissan brand in every circumstance. The replacement fluid needs to meet the appropriate requirements for the CVT.

BG specifically markets its 3183-03 product as a match for Nissan NS-3. Therefore, if a technician serviced a 2020 Rogue with BG 3183-03 or another BG product that BG lists for the Rogue NS-3 application, using a non-Nissan-branded fluid does not automatically mean the technician used the wrong fluid.

Normal operation after the fluid change is useful information, but it does not establish whether the correct fluid was used. If the Rogue is operating normally, there is no reason to conclude from the word “BG” alone that the CVT has a problem.

Instead, verify the product installed if the documentation shows that the exact BG product is specified for Nissan NS-3 applications, that addresses the compatibility question much more directly than the brand name does.
